triceratops surprise

made shortbread for james, who is off at college now. We had no oats save for the instant type, and we’re out of chocolate chips, which is an exteremely rare occurance ( the apocalypse must be near!) so it had to be shortbread. It’s all in rabbit shapes and stars and hearts and apples and blossoms, with a few dinosaurs and hippopotamuses (hippopotami?) thrown in. really.

I’m also working on a slew of new shirts. Fall approaches at an extroardinary pace, you know. so i’ve collected everything solid- colored and i’ve got lots of little things and thingywhatsits to sew on to them. a car shape thing, a few sparrows on branches, a triceratops ( cant get enough of those dinosaurs) , etc. Hope to finish them by the end of the week.

her lovely blankie

yoko’s reaction to her new blanket (which I put over her):

<>1) pull it off
2) stomp on it
3) sit on it                                                                                                                                                            4) chew on it thoughtfullyNow it has assumed a rumpled position at the edge of her circular bed-thing. She likes it. I saw her under it earlier.

from the netherlands (or somewhere) with love

Kwark taart is (I think) from the Nertherlands. It’s pronounced something like quaark tart. It’s uber- yummy, and it’s pretty simple- ish too, so make it now. please.

you need:

32 oz vanilla yogurt ( 1 large container) ,fat free or whatever you like
<> 2 envelopes knox unflavored gelatin

<>about 1/2 box nilla wafers (vanilla cookies) or ladyfingers

<>about 2 or 3 bananas, sliced lengthwise
<> 1 11 oz can of mandarin orange sections in light syrup

<>handful of raisins

<>Catch the juice from the mandarin oranges in a small pan and dissolve the gelatin over low heat. This might take a minute. Make sure there are no grainy bits; it’ll make lumpy yogurt. Mix a bit of the yogurt into the syrup so that it looks like milk and then combine it with the rest of the yogurt. If you do this in the original yogurt container you’ll have less dishes to do! Cover the bottom of a round cake pan with some of the yogurt, then cover with the nilla wafers and bananas. Now more yogurt, a sheet of cookies, and the rest of the yogurt. Lace up the top with mandarin oranges and raisins in pretty formations. Put it in the fridge and leave it there for about four hours or until set. yum yum.

According to Carla, who gave me the recipe, they sell this stuff in The Netherlands called kwark, which is not quite like yogurt. They also have (unrelated) these yummy chocolate sprinkles that are not at all like the ones you would commonly buy in the US. These ones actually taste like chocolate, not wax & powdered sugar, and you put them on buttered toast. I’m not sure yet if it’s better than Nutella or if it doesn’t come close.

Oh, and speaking of yogurt, check out www.stonyfield.com. They have good info about recycling and some odd videos. More recipes, too.
